Success Story 1 – Transforming a Multi-Clinic GP/ECC Veterinary Group

Success Story 1 – Transforming a Multi-Clinic GP/ECC Veterinary Group

During my three-year tenure as Business Manager for a mixed ECC/GP veterinary group in Melbourne, I delivered significant operational, financial, cultural, and structural improvements that strengthened the organisation’s performance and long-term capability. Working closely with the Directors, I led strategy across budgeting, P&L management, capital investment, governance, and compliance, while ensuring strong workplace and safety standards.

A key achievement was growing the workforce by 70% to more than 100 employees, stabilising a business heavily impacted by COVID and lacking foundational systems and structure. The ECC hospital — an essential regional service — had been chronically understaffed and frequently on bypass. Through targeted recruitment, redesigned remuneration, strengthened retention strategies, and implementation of robust HR systems, the ECC was restored to a fully staffed, fully functional 24/7 service supporting GP clinics and internal specialists.

Across the network, I revitalised an underperforming GP clinic that had been operating in a limited vaccine-only capacity. By rebuilding leadership structure, upgrading systems, and improving workflows, the clinic returned to full operations — delivering four-vet days, reinstating surgery, and successfully onboarding and developing three new graduates in 2025 through structured training and CPD pathways.

I implemented organisation-wide HR and wellbeing frameworks, including a new HR platform, updated policies and SOPs, an Employee Assistance Program, a dedicated staff wellness space, and strengthened professional development pathways — significantly improving culture, retention, and team performance.

A major highlight was leading the end-to-end development and launch of a new GP clinic adjoining the ECC hospital. I secured the lease, negotiated with landlords, managed the project budget, oversaw design and construction, ensured regulatory compliance, and procured all equipment.

The project was delivered on time and under budget, resulting in a modern facility featuring a staff wellness room, client comfort spaces, and an outdoor consulting courtyard. To support future growth, I also delivered key technology and brand upgrades, including implementing TANDA for workforce management, installing digital client education media, and leading a full organisational rebrand supported by community engagement and marketing initiatives.Together, these outcomes strengthened clinical capacity, improved team stability, and positioned the organisation for long-term sustainable growth.

Clinic Success Story 2– Lifting a Small Clinic from Overwhelm to Sustainable

When I began working with a small outer-Sydney GP clinic — then a one-vet, two-nurse practice — the business was constrained by structural and operational challenges. The sole veterinarian was managing clinical work, clients, staff coordination, and daily operations, leading to burnout, stalled growth, and difficulty meeting rising demand. Recruitment challenges, inefficient workflows, and a lack of leadership structure further limited stability and scalability.

Working closely with the Lead Veterinarian and team, I implemented targeted foundation changes to enable sustainable growth. This included recruiting, training, and mentoring a junior nurse into a capable Practice Manager, establishing much-needed leadership structure and improving communication and culture. I redesigned rostering systems to better distribute workload and reduce pressure on the Lead Vet, and completed a full audit and optimisation of the clinic’s ezyVet system — correcting earlier implementation issues, improving workflow efficiency, and strengthening revenue capture.

As the clinic expanded rapidly, we built a young, engaged team eager to grow together. I invested significant time onsite supporting collaboration, communication, and team connection, helping build a positive, high-trust culture that translated into smoother operations and stronger retention.

To support long-term capability, I also introduced structured mentoring pathways, enabling the clinic to confidently hire and support its first new graduate veterinarian.

Within 12 months, the clinic grew from a three-person team to a thriving nine-member workforce, supported by clear leadership, optimised systems, sustainable rostering, strong team morale, improved client satisfaction, and stronger financial performance.

This people-first, strategy-led transformation moved the clinic from survival mode into sustainable growth, creating strong foundations for continued expansion. More importantly, it created a fun and respectful l place to work.

Success Story 3– Rapid Digital Innovation to Sustain Clinic Operations During COVID-19 Lockdown

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was leading ezyVet implementation projects across a large veterinary group, regularly travelling between Melbourne and New Zealand to deliver full end-to-end rollouts. My responsibilities included project design, data migration, system configuration, workflow redevelopment, staff training, and in-clinic support to ensure smooth adoption.

On the day New Zealand’s borders closed, clinics were immediately placed under strict “zero-entry” rules — meaning no clients could enter buildings at all. This created an urgent operational and financial crisis, with traditional workflows no longer viable and revenue rapidly declining.

Recognising the need for immediate change, I designed and pitched a new digital operating framework to senior executives — proposing a fully online service model to maintain patient care, client access, and cashflow during lockdown.

Following approval, I designed and built the group’s first integrated online ordering portal for food and medication, connecting ezyVet with drop-shipping processes to automate ordering, enable online payments, and maintain stock and service continuity. I led system architecture design, platform build and integration, pilot testing, and created a full training ecosystem including resources, templates, and live virtual training delivered to more than 140 staff across the group.

Within weeks, the platform expanded to include telehealth consultations, allowing veterinarians to continue providing remote care and stabilise revenue during full client exclusion.

The outcome was significant. The system enabled clinics to maintain operations, protect financial stability, and continue delivering essential patient care during one of the most restrictive lockdown environments globally. Importantly, it also provided staff with clarity and confidence during a period of high uncertainty, ultimately becoming a long-term digital asset that strengthened operational resilience well beyond the pandemic.
